Adirondack Scenic Railroad
Area Mountain Bike Trails: New York
The extensive Old Forge Mountain Bike Trail System provides riding for all levels on well-maintained and graded trails. What makes this system so special is that you can access it via the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Bike & Rail excursions in July and August leave from Thendara Station. At Carter Station you can get off and return to Old Forge using the trail system.
If the ride is too long for you then design your own out-and-back or loop ride on the trails and return by train. In a single day experience some outstanding mountain biking in a spectacular setting and relive the golden era of railroading.
The Adirondacks have been a destination for travelers for over 100 years. The first train to Thendara was introduced in 1892. It went on to become part of the NY Central System, which carried travelers as well as freight to the Adirondacks. In recent years service has been re-introduced, word is spreading and under the guidance of the Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society the railroad is expanding operations.
Thendara Depot is home office for the ARPS. The depot includes a ticket office, museum, gift shop, restrooms, refreshments and picnic tables. Nearby are a railroad shop building, freight house and parking lots. The railroad runs May-October and offers special events such as the Roaring 20s Gangster Shoot-Out, Eco-Tour, Canoe & Rail, Bike & Rail, Fall Foliage and dinner trips.

Old Forge Lake Cruises
Lake cruises are also available from Old Forge through the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Journey back in time to an era when there were no roads north of Old Forge and steamboats carried people and goods to the great camps and inns along the shores. You can even cruise on the mailboat, which still serves residents along the lake.
