Delaware and Ulster Scenic Rail Excursion
: New York
Area Mountain Bike Trails: New York
The Catskill Revitalization Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that owns, operates and maintains both the Delaware & Ulster Rail Ride and the Catskill Scenic Trail. Relive local railroad history aboard the Delaware & Ulster as it travels through the mysterious, legendary Catskill mountains. The ride follows the East Branch of the Delaware River past quaint villages, farmland and beautiful mountain views.
The Arkville Depot is home to railroad history exhibits, a gift shop and café in a vintage caboose. The train runs from May-October. Special events include the "Train Robbery", "A Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine" (for the kids) and "Twilight on the Rails", with live music and hors’doeurves.
The original Delaware & Ulster rail ride crossed the Catskills between Kingston, on the Hudson River, and Oneonta, in the Susquehanna Valley. It was chartered in 1866, became the Delaware & Ulster in 1875 and was completed in 1900. Known as one of the most scenic lines in the east, it was instrumental to the booming Catskill tourist trade. It also moved agricultural and commercial products including coal, timber, and bluestone.
The railroad faded from use and ended its run entirely by 1976. Portions of the rail ride have been revived as part of an effort to establish an historic corridor of 19th century Catskill life and industry.
