The Green Mountain Flyer : Vermont
Area Mountain Bike Trails: Southern, Vermont
Enjoy the beautiful countryside of southern Vermont during the summer or spectacular fall foliage season aboard the Green Mountain Flyer. The vintage train, with restored coaches and diesel engine, travels between Bellows Falls and Chester. On the way there are views of the Connecticut and Williams Rivers, Brockway Mills Gorge and historic covered bridges. Refreshments are available on the snack car. For a small additional fee you can ride in a classic turn-of-the-century passenger coach.
Begin your journey back to the heyday of railroad travel in the 1940s era ticket office and waiting room of Bellows Falls Union Station (circa 1850s). The station still serves the Green Mountain Railroad and Amtrak. Lunch in the picnic area at the restored Chester Depot, built in 1852. Depot Square Gifts at the Bellows Falls Station offers railroad and Green Flyer items for sale. The 2-hour excursions run from June-October.
Special excursions (reservations required) include the Easter Bunny Express, Mother’s Day Excursion, Bellows Falls Fireworks Special, Rutland Limited, Fall Ludlow Limited and the Santa Express. Check the website or call for schedule and fares. The Green Mountain Railroad is a true working railroad with both freight and passenger service linked to a wider New England and Canadian network. It also operates the White River Flyer out of Union Depot in White River Junction, and the Champlain Valley Flyer out of Burlington.
