Strasburg Railroad : Pennsylvania
Area Mountain Bike Trails: Pennsylvania
After your bike ride on the trails in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, take the time to relax and experience living history aboard the Strasburg Scenic Railroad in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is America’s oldest short-line railroad. See Amish country from beautifully restored passenger cars pulled by coal-burning steam locomotives. The 45 minute scenic train ride travels through the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and runs from April-December. Strasburg Railroad offers passage in the first class parlor, deluxe lounge, open air car or standard coach with an option for dining. Special events include Wine & Cheese Train, Easter Bunny Train, Trains & Troops (ride with re-enactors from all eras of the military), Santa’s Paradise Express and Day Out with Thomas.
The Strasburg Railroad was incorporated by the Pennsulvania legislature in 1832. The earliest timetable found has the train up and running by 1851. The 4 1/2 mile straight track was used for both passengers and freight. A streetcar line between Lancaster and Strasburg (turn of the century) ended passenger service. By the 1950s highway transportation and a series of storms did the railroad in. A group of railfans put together by local industrialist Henry Long saved the railroad. It is now one of the most popular attractions in Lancaster County.
The railroad owns one of the most significant collections of historic steam trains. See these gems at the Railroad Museum in the Strasburg Station complex. The quaint station is also home to the ticket office, a switch tower, water tower, shop and bookstore, toy store, engine house, freight car displays, photo studio and restaurant. The mechanical shop is a fascinating restoration facility.
