Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad (New Hampshire)
Area Mountain Bike Trails: Lakes Region, New Hampshire
The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad runs from Meredith or Weirs Beach to Lakeport, New Hampshire. It takes you along the shores of Meredith Bay with spectacular views of the lake, islands and Belknap Mountain. It then continues south along Paugus Bay to Lakeport, where the engine is moved to the other end of the train for the return trip. The 16 mile, 2 hour excursion is offered weekends May 28-June 12, Sept 5-Oct 23 and daily June 25-Sept 4. Departures are from either Meredith or Weirs Beach. A 1 hour ride is also offered.
Enjoy a unique Hobo Lunch, snack or ice cream sundae on board the authentically restored vintage coaches. Special events include a Sun Tan Special (swim at Weirs Beach), Murder Mystery Turkey Dinner Train, Fireworks Train, Fall Foliage Special, Santa Express, Blues Turkey Dinner Train and others. The WSR runs on the tracks of the "Concord to Lincoln" line, once part of the Boston & Maine Railroad system. Original construction of this section of the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad began in 1846, reached Plymouth by 1850 and Wells River, VT by 1853.The line from Plymouth to Lincoln was completed in 1883 as the Pemigewasset Valley Railroad. The early 20th century saw heavy use for both passengers and freight north through New Hampshire and Vermont to Canada.
The Hobo Railraod in Lincoln (White Mountains) is part of the same operation. The M/S Mount Washington, a first class excursion ship based in Weirs Beach, offers scenic and dinner cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee (cruisenh.com). Check with the railroad or cruiseline for the possibility of a train-boat connection.
