General Description: The Woodlawn Trustees area, a lovely oasis of green amidst major shopping centers and developments is located adjacent to Brandywine Creek State Park and is a popular mountain biking destination. It is a large tract of land owned and operated by the Woodlawn Trustees, Inc., an entity formed by a group of residents. Although the almost 2,000 acres are privately held, the public is allowed to use the multi-use trail system. The trails take you through mature woodlands and open meadows, across creeks and you'll often skirt along the edges of farmland. Creek Road (see map above) is part of the Northern Delaware Greenway, a cooperative effort of the Division of Parks & Recreation, the Northern Delaware Greenway Council and the Woodlawn Trustees. The goal is to create a cross-county Greenway system linking White Clay Creek, C&D land, Delaware’s Coastal Heritage Greenway and Greenways in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Creek Road follows the Brandywine south into Brandywine Creek State Park, which has additional trails for riding.
The Trails: The Woodlawn Trustees Area trail network has many interconnecting trails that allow for great out-and-back as well as loop rides. There is something here for everyone. The wide trails have grassy, dirt or wood chip surfaces. There are flat sections of easy doubletrack, as well as more challenging terrain and hill climbs that will provide a good workout. Although not considered very technical, several trails will provide enough obstacles to make your mountain bike ride interesting. The over 15 miles of informal trails invite exploration, extend north over the border into Pennsylvania and south into Brandywine Creek State Park. For a detailed map showing designated trails, see ( For more information ) below.
To preserve these lands for continued public use, Woodlawn Trustees requests that everyone observe the following rules: Woodlawn Trustees, Inc. Public Recreational Use Policy Woodlawn invites members of the public, at their own risk, to walk, bike and horse-back on the designated trails and grassy strips along the road frontage of the area between 8:00 am and dusk. Please do not cross or disturb fields in agricultural use. No Possession or use of alcoholic beverages or illegal substances
Historical Note: The Brandywine Battlefield Park Brandywine Creek weaves through the charming countryside of Chester County, PA and northern Delaware. This area of rolling hillsides, fieldstone houses, backcountry roads and rural landscape is rich in history. The Brandywine Battlefield Park, across the border in Chadds Ford PA, brings to life the largest engagement of the Revolutionary War, fought on September 11, 1777, between the Continental Army led by General George Washington and the British forces headed by General William Howe. This is also the birthplace of the duPont Company. Brandywine Creek State Park was formerly a dairy farm owned by the duPont family.
The Smith Covered Bridge The Smith Covered Bridge, which crosses Brandywine Creek on Smith Bridge Road, was originally built in 1839 and destroyed in a 1961 Halloween fire. The 145 ft. long bridge was reconstructed in 2002 to its historical appearance. Its re-opening brought out a parade of horse-drawn carriages and classic cars. It was one of three historic bridges in the state. The other two are the Ashland and Wooddale Bridges, also located in New Castle County. Crosses Brandywine Creek north of Winterthur. DE100 north 1.7 miles from jct with DE92 in Winterthur, northeast on Smiths Bridge Rd. 1.4 miles to the bridge. There is a small parking lot at Creek Road just south of the picturesque covered Smith Bridge.
