| Directions: Two miles north of Camden on U.S. Route 1
General Description: Camden Hills State Park located a few minutes north of Camden, Maine lies atop Mt. Battie where sweeping views of Camden, Penobscot Bay, and surrounding islands await. On a clear day, visitors can see Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park. In the fall, the park offers spectacular views of fall foliage. It is one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in Maine. From high cliffs and ledges to lush lowlands and rocky shore, the changing terrain provides diverse habitat for a variety of plants and animals. These natural features, plus well-equipped camping and picnicing facilities, an extensive trail system, historic landmarks and proximity to picturesque Camden make this park a popular day-use and camping area. Camden, a quintessential New England town, features shops that are within walking distance to the working harbor. Harbor cruises, whale and puffin watches are available. Summer nights spent under the stars is a recipe for family fun. Campers who stay at the park's campground enjoy the comfort stations that are equipped with hot showers.
The Trails: Mountain biking is permitted on basically two trails withing the park. The 5 mile multi-use (snowmobile) trail and the Frohock Mountain Trail. Multi-use Snowmobile Trail: (5 miles) All levels (Summer Bypass: Experienced riders only) Beginning on the lower end of the Megunticook Trail on undulating terrain, this route is a pleasant forested route which travels around the eastern base of Mt. Megunticook. It continues past the old ski shelter site to the Youngtown Road trail head. The Summer ByPass cuts out several low, wet areas of the trail. The bypass is technically challenging and requires good bike handling skills. Great fun for the intermediate and advanced rider. Once connected again to the main road, the terrain becomes smooth enough for beginners. Frohock Mountain Trail: (1.9 miles) Moderate to advanced. Mountain Bike trail with natural surface, rocks and roots that winds through oak and spruce forests over three mountains. Some steep climbs and descents. (Hikers are also permitted on this trail).
After your bike ride, take a hike up Mt. Megunticook, the highest of the Camden Hills - and highest peak on the mainland. The Megunticook Trail, 1 mile through woods up the eastern slope, ends at Ocean Lookout, elevation 1,300 feet. It's a moderate climb but the sudden sweeping views of the ocean, the lakes and other Camden hills won't disappoint you.
Historical Note: The park took shape in the 1930's when the Federal Government purchased farm land in order to help local farmers whose land was no longer productive. The National Park Service then supervised the design of a park on these lands. They relied on local talent, such as noted landscape architect Hans Heistad and a Civilian Conservartion Corps crew that was based here. Upon the park's completion, the federal government transferred its Camden Hills holdings to The State of Maine for use as a state park.
