The main trailhead is in the village of Speculator. Park at the town ball field just south of the intersection of NY Routes 30 and 8 and Elm Lake Road. Access is also possible from “Old Route 30”.
See Adirondack Forest Preserve for trail regulations and other important information. Even though this trail is on Private Property, it is located in the Adirondack Forest.
The Speculator region, in the heart of the Adirondacks, offers a variety of opportunities for mountain biking. This land of mountains, forest, rivers and lakes invites a celebration of the great outdoors. The Speculator Loop Trails pass through a working tree farm of mixed hardwoods and conifers on property owned by the International Paper Company.
The land is managed for both public recreation and the protection of wildlife and watersheds. There are two connected loop trails, the Outer Loop at 13.7 miles and the Inner Loop at 7.2 miles. The Inner Loop is also known as the Kunjamuk Loop because it passes the mysterious “Kunjamuk Cave”. The longer is the easier of the two and follows wide, hardpacked logging roads and some paved road. The shorter is more difficult and shares some of the same paved and old logging roads with additional challenging singletrack for the adventure loving mountain biker.
There is always the possibility of spotting wildlife in the various habitats of the area including black bear, whitetail deer, snowshoe hare, wild turkey, grouse, woodcock, great blue heron, loons, duck and osprey. Remember that this is private property! You are not allowed to venture off the trail except at Long Level, where there is a picnic area and restroom. Please obey the following trail etiquette and rules.
Outer Loop: (13.7 miles)
Trailhead: At the Speculator Ball Field (all trail signs make reference to the ball field from either direction of travel). There is a kiosk with detailed maps and trail information.
The well marked trail follows Elm Lake Road northeast from the “4 corners” in town. After 4 miles Elm Lake will be on the right. At 5.3 miles you will reach the picnic area and toilet (known as“outhouse corner”). Turn right and follow Long Level, turn right after crossing the Kunjamuk River Bridge and follow this trail back to the ball field. There are two prominent hills, each about 3/10ths of a mile long. One is next to Elm Lake and the other shortly after the bridge.
Inner Loop or “Kunjamuk Cave Loop” (7.2 miles)
Trailhead: This loop starts 0.2 miles past the end of pavement on Elm Lake Road, or off the north side of Old Route 30.
This trail has short rolling hills and steep, sharp curves. Although shorter in length it is far more challenging with steep and difficult ascents and descents. The Kunjamuk Cave is 1.2 miles from the intersection with East Road on the left side of the trail. When approaching the Cave Loop from either direction, ride around the locked gate on the designated side.
