Directions & Trail Description

Location: Pleasant Valley, NY. Dutchess County.

Length/Configuration: 12+ miles. Design your own mountain bike loop or out-and-back ride using network of 4WD roads and singletrack trail.

Terrain/Surface: Well-maintained, hard-packed, dirt or cinder 4WD roads. Varied singletrack from fast and smooth to technical, with roots and rocks.

Technical Difficulty: Moderate

Elevation Change: Low hilly terrain with some moderately steep slopes.

Caution: Shared use with hikers and equestrians. Avoid hunting season between late September and March.

Directions:

Heading north on the Taconic State Parkway exit right at Tyrell Rd. Follow Tyrell Rd. 3/4 mile to the NYSDEC trailhead marker and parking lot. Another lot can be accessed directly from the Taconic just south of Tyrell Rd. At the NYSDEC sign on the Taconic Parkway you must exit sharply right.

General Description:

The 909 acre, Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area, affectionately known as "909" is located in the heart of Dutchess County. Comprised of rolling hills and deciduous hardwood forest, it offers a pleasant respite for many. You'll find mountain bikers, hikers, bird watchers, equestrians, hunters, ATV's, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers (winter) enjoying the trails. A variety of upland game species including deer, grouse, squirrel and rabbit make their home here.

909 Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area Trails

The terrain consists mostly of rolling hills with moderately steep slopes interspersed throughout. Well- maintained hard-packed 4WD fire roads circle and loop through dense hardwood forest over hilly terrain providing excellent mountain biking routes. Branching off these fire roads are more challenging singletrack spur trails that will offer a wider variety of trail experiences during your 909 MUA bike ride, from fast and smooth to twisty and technical, with roots, grass and loose rocks.

There's a lot of ground to cover and you can easily ride for a couple of hours without doing the same trails twice. If you can't ride with someone who knows the trails, pick up a trail map from the Department of Environmental Conservation or check with a local bike shop first.

A word of advice. Avoid riding here during hunting season.
