The Youghiogheny River Trail is part of the Great Allegheny Passage, a 152 mile bicycling and walking trail that will connect Pittsburgh with the C&O Canal in Cumberland, Maryland. This section of the trail was once the railbed for the Western Maryland Railroad. The trail is hard-packed crushed limestone, wooded, mostly shaded and flat with some gentle grades which makes it an excellent family bike trip. 27 miles of trail pass through Ohiopyle State Park. This part of the trail is beautiful with many spectacular waterfalls. The “Yough” (yawk) provides some of the best whitewater rafting in the east. Kids love it. They like to park their bikes and walk down to the river and watch the rafters and kayakers from the "High Bridge" over the Youghiogheny River rapids in Ohiopyle State Park. Ferncliff Peninsula National Natural Landmark in Ohiopyle State Park was created by a bend in the river and is a unique habitat with many rare and interesting plants (accessible by foot trail). Animals common to the park and trail include deer, turkey, grouse, rabbit and squirrel. Note: There are also 13.2 miles of moderate to advanced mountain biking trails in Ohiopyle State Park.
Historical Note: Native American tribes travelled the river valley for trade and hunting expeditions. George Washington led an expedition here in 1754, searching for a route to Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh). He gave up after encountering the falls of Ohiopyle and the rapids below. During the industrial boom of the late 19th century smoke from coke ovens, used in the production of steel, could be seen along the river. Old foundations, railroad structures, and the remnants of coke ovens and coal mines can be seen along the trail.
