General Description:

This is an easy, scenic mountain bike ride ideal for recreational cycling and family cruising, providing the kids are strong peddlers, on mostly quiet, backcountry dirt roads around the perimeter of scenic Berlin Pond. It is mostly wooded landscape with not much development near Barre and Montpelier Vermont.

Nestled at the foot of the rich, northern hardwood forested Irish Hills, the Pond supplies the drinking water for Vermont's capital city, Montpelier. It is a also a significant wetlands complex in the central Vermont region from an ecological perspective. Berlin Pond and its associated marshes, swamps and vernal pools provides habitat for a large variety of mammals, birds, and invertebrates, as well a wide diversity of plants. No wonder it is also popular spot for bird watchers, hikers and joggers.

The Route:

Park at the designated parking area on Brookfield Road near the intersection of Paine Turnpike. Turn left out of the lot and ride along the east side of the pond.

0.4 miles: After crossing a wetland area, the road will climb into a wooded area. Bear left to continue on Brookfield Road. Proceed south along Brookfield Road. The terrain is rolling, passing a few residences, farmsteads and glances of the pond to the west.

2.2 miles: The road reaches a remote intersection. Take a sharp left onto Mirror Lake Road.

2.7 miles: After crossing a wetland, the road intersects with Paine Turnpike South. Turn left (north) and proceed along the western shore of the pond.

4.5 miles: You will begin to parallel I-89. Not long after that, Brookfield Road will appear on your left. Take the left turn back to the parking area.
